Magnus is the patron Saint of the Orkney Isles, and the name of an oilfield some 170km NE of the Shetland Isles.
Magnus is a book about oil, and specifically about its connection with the lives of organisms that lived millions of years ago. Visually, the book uses imagery from the Northern lights to conflate oil with its presence under the North Sea.
Magnus is quite a personal book. Growing up near a refinery at Grangemouth, school trips were organised for us to gaze upon the pipes and flames and boggle at the mysteries of catalyst crackers.
We were at one point shown a corporate video about the development of the Magnus field, and the subject has remained of interest to me. I plan to revisit these themes in a more developed work in the future.
